NileValleyPeoples: Critical Race Theory Debunked 3- James Patterson was right about racism against white males

Parts one and two of our series on "Critical Race Theory" examined standard "refutation" narratives involving a white victim "card." But as if tailor made for part 3- we have the case of James Patterson. Multimillionaire author James Patterson sparked controversy recently and comprehensively refuted Critical Race Theory, when he pointed out that older white males are victims of racism in the publishing industry. Said Patterson:

In an interview about his new memoir "James Patterson by James Patterson: The Stories of My Life" with The Sunday Times that published last weekend, the 75-year-old author lamented on the perceived plight of white men in the entertainment industry, calling their struggle to find writing jobs in film, theater, TV and publishing industries.

"[Its} "just another form of racism." What’s that all about?" he continued. "Can you get a job? Yes. Is it harder? Yes. It’s even harder for older writers. You don’t meet many 52-year-old white males.”

Reaction was swift with rebuttals pointing out that:

Lesser qualified or notable white writers keep getting bigger advances and more opportunities than even established black writers with more books, sales or awards. "Publishing executives responded by releasing statements expressing support for racial justice, announcing antiracism training and promising to put out more books by writers of color."
A huge NY Times sampling of data from major publishing houses revealed that 95% of the authors were white.
A 2008 survey turned up the same results- 88% of those published were white authors. As did a 2020 survey- 89% of the books were written by white authors.
A 2019 NYT survey also found white dominance on the backend, the "gatekeepers": 85% of the people who acquire and edit books are white.. Another survey again shows a similar pattern: . A January 2020 survey by Lee & Low Books found that 76% of publishing employees were White, and 74% were cisgender women.
USAToday ran stats on its own Top Seller's list. Again whites dominated over 85% of the list, including Bill O'Reilly, John Grisham, David Baldacci, Nicholas Sparks, right wing polemicist Mark Levan, and, of course, James Patterson.
Several established Black editors and authors noted that white publishers seemed to be using an informal "quota" system, where 2 or 3 titles by black authors signaled a "done" for that particular year or time cycle.
Within related media such as film, a 2022 Hollywood Diversity Report conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) found that white, male directors continue to be an overwhelming majority throughout the years - in 2019, 85.6% of directors were white while 84.9% were male.
Patterson was also taken to task for the irony of one of the richest, most notable and best-selling authors, a white male, lamenting how bad things are for white males, but lets not go there.

A victim...

Why is "reverse racism" being invoked when it is pretty clear from almost all available data that the main reason white males have lost ground is white women?

Interesting that Patterson, who as a veteran with decades in the field invokes "racism" when he is quite aware that a large slice of people on either the best-selling, or regular author lists. much more so that any authors of color, are white women. Why is that? It is also interesting that he invokes "racism" specifically, but only indirectly mentions another elephant in the room- ageism- that impacts white male authors? Aren't these examples of the same distorted "race card playing" conservatives hypocritically cry about re "the liberals"?

Why is "reverse racism against males" being invoked when, not only are white women the main reason that some white males may have regressed, but even when actual confrontation take place in offices or courts over race , whites have notched up several victories, and have succeeded in limiting things like racial "quotas". The record shows many rulings FAVORABLE to white males (See Americans for Effective Law Enforcement, Inc. (AELE) Case Law Summaries 2018 for example ): such as:

(a) male firefighters or police suing and winning against such quotas and being subsequently hired/promoted,
(b) courts rejecting various "quota" plans that hurt said males, or
(c) courts upholding AA plans, just as they have upheld white union AA plans, where such are narrowly tailored to remedying past discrimination- i.e. white women being denied promotion for years in favor of men.
Far from a vale of tears, the overall record shows while males winning consistently or having implementations sharply limited in "affirmative" action cases, again, to white male benefit.

City of Boston, 2003; Lalla v. City of New Orleans, 1999; Ashton v. Memphis, 1999; Abban v. Boston Police, Mass. Civ. Serv. 1998; Dallas Fire Fighters Assn. v. City of Dallas 1998, Dallas Fire Fighters v. Dallas, 1995; or a white male police applicant winning reverse discrimination suit; city's affirmative action plan was deficient. Lilly v. City of Beckley, 1985, etc.

St. Pol., 1995; or federal court rejecting a D.C. fire dept. affirmative action plan, after firefighters' union and justice dept. object. Hammon v. Barry, 1985, 1987. See also the use of special collateral attacks or multiple new indirect attacks against settled or agreed to affirmative action consent degrees- which have had some success in delaying or undercutting such decrees.

And why is "racism" being invoked when Patterson, who has been around for decades, knows that publishing trends come and go: one year paranormal, the next sci-fiction, the next female biographies and so on? The current cycle is just yet another trendy cycle built around current events like the George Floyd murder case, where "authors of color" or "the black experience" or "gays of color" etc become trendy or "hot" for a time, before the next trend gains prominence.

Everyone knows that there are passing trends and cycles, and Patterson of all people should have known. Established "colored" authors and editors in the field know this as well, In one NY Times survey, one book company editor readily acknowledges how trendiness influences decisions: QUOTE:

"Ms. Brown attributed the fluctuation in publishers’ support for Black writers to the news cycle, which periodically directs the nation’s attention to acts of brutality against Black people. Publishers’ interest in amplifying Black voices wanes as media coverage peters out because “many white editors are not exposed to Black life beyond the headlines,” Ms. Brown said."

Given the above by people who know better, what are we to conclude? Whatever its shortcomings, (and it does have some) "Critical" Race Theory gained ground in legal or college venues because it (a) demonstrated the salience of race in many aspects of American life, and (b) exposed a continual narrative of duplicity and distortion to deny the salience or applicability of race- not merely by rhetoric but by hard data and court cases.

What for example are we to conclude from the massive distortion of the "Pigford" case, where African-American farmers, who had suffered decades of discrimination, finally, after decades of litigation, won the hugest civil rights settlement in history, but saw relatively little money or satisfactory reform when the smoke cleared? Their struggle was dismissed and distorted as a "black giveaway" by right-wing media operatives, when in fact, in an exceedingly complicated case involving tens of thousands, the black farmers as a whole saw minimal amounts (what's $50,000 per head for example, when one farm combine may cost $300,000, or debt service might cost $10,000 per month), or no compensation at all. And what about the white wrongdoers still in place within the USDA who engineered the discrimination problem? Little of this is mentioned in the distorted right-wing "giveaway" narrative. As of this writing, many are still in place. As one detailed history notes:

“The civil rights and equal opportunity laws of the mid-1960s prompted USDA bureaucrats to embrace equal rights rhetorically even as they intensified discrimination. This passive nullification, voicing agreement with equal rights while continuing or intensifying discrimination, did not rely on antebellum intellectual arguments or confrontations but instead thrived silently in the offices of biased employees. Phone calls and conversations at segregated meetings and conventions left no racist fingerprints, but the accretion of prejudice festered and ultimately grew into a plan to eliminate minority, women, and small farmers by preventing their sharing equally in federal programs. Despite overwhelming evidence of discrimination, incompetence, and falsehoods in many offices, the USDA never cut off funds to those offices, and apparently no white person was fired and few were even relocated or reprimanded.”

They failed to account for the survey’s historical undercounts of Black farmers, which—along with other factors—led them to understate the number of potentially eligible claimants. Our reporting suggests that most Black people who farmed in the relevant period did not receive Pigford payments, and a closer look at those who did shows the payments were often inadequate.. ..many Black farmers do not feel the settlement helped “close a painful chapter in our collective history.”

The primary goal of the Pigford consent decree was to pay black farmers quickly without much decision about how USDA would change its practices to ensure zero tolerance for acts of discrimina tion and the employees who perpetuate those illegal acts."

Critical" theory would not have the influence that it does (and it may not be that much) if people were more honest about race, and race can be honestly dealt with by the simple facts of the historical record without needing any "critical" theory. Too much of the current anti-"critical theory" "campaign" though provides an excellent, diversionary propaganda strawman that allows people to avoid honestly discussing the issues, or even acknowledging the simple facts. The strawman is designed so people don't have to think - they knee-jerk, like lemmings, only have to remember standard propaganda phrases- somewhat like how the charge of "communism" was deployed to stifle or sidetrack civil rights campaigns and leaders. Seems some methods never change. But hey, Patterson is to be commended for his refutation of the dastardly "critical" theory. He has done a real service.
