'AsiaRate' Lawsuit against Harvard shows dirty little secret- white quotas used at elite universities

Not "our kind of people" ...

A recent class-action lawsuit representing some 16,000 Asian students charges that Harvard University used a semi-secret "rating" system that pegged Asian students lower on desirable personality traits. Apparently those durn Asians were not sufficiently high on "likability", and "positive personality" among other things. These lower ratings decreased Asian chances at admission to the elite school. Less Asian admissions of course means more whites. Sweet! Even more interesting, an earlier internal review of its admissions conducted by Harvard found anti-Asian bias, but Harvard swept the findings under the rug and did not act on them. Note the graph below- at top braniac school CalTech, which goes strictly by merit, Asian enrollments rise steadily, but in the socially prestigious Ivy League universities, they keep dropping.


This lawsuit confirms the suspicions of many - that white people have been, and are using "informal" or hidden quotas and "caps" to keep out Asian competition, and at the same time, pushing blacks out front as scapegoats and propaganda diversions on long hollowed-out policies of "affirmative action." But the specific white quotas are only the tip of the iceberg. While lecturing about "merit," whites lock in further advantage by the widespread use of "legacy", "specialty" and "cash-connection" admissions- sons and daughters of white alumni, or those with enough cash connections, get special preferences- including a lower bar for admissions. Its another great way of keeping out those hard-working Asians who rely precisely on "merit" and not "likability" and "personality" to build up admission points.

A large population of white "victim card" players has arisen attributing many of their failures to alleged "quotas" and "affirmative action." Such whiners, deploying a web of denial, distortion and deception,  now find increasing representation in some of the young white population as we have seen previously, even though they well know that
  • (a) Black gains on most fronts are not the products of "Affirmative action." For example most blacks had already pulled themselves above the poverty line prior to the AA quotas of the 1970s, and black expansion in higher education is a product of things like the GI Bill, and general federal aid to ALL students not "quotas." (Sowell 1981, 1983, 2004).
  • (b) Remedial "quotas" came about first at the behest of white unions whose members were discriminated against because of union membership (Sowell 1975, op cit).They were not "invented for black people." In fact, white quotas, formal and informal, remained strongly in force well into the 1970s. It was after the civil rights victories of the mid and late 1960s that additional hard scrutiny began to be applied to white workforces, and an exasperated Nixon and his Secretary of Labor George Schulz, used that well established remedy because of white intransigence in allowing blacks fair job opportunities. Hence Nixon's "Philadelphia Plan"  had to strong-arm racist unions living well off federal contracts to comply with new civil rights laws and remedy biased practices (Yuli 2006. Richard Nixon and the Rise of Affirmative Action). General social histories of the era also note the same; wearied of their racism, and cynically prolonged negotiations, Schulz simply ordered the white dominated unions to enroll a certain number of blacks or face a cut off of the federal gravy train. Local courts got in on the act as they forced open cosy white job protection rackets in police forces, fire departments, civil service agencies, hospitals, colleges, unions, construction firms etc..   • (c) "AA quotas" in education are primarily a phenomenon at elite or "flagship" colleges and universities (Sanders 2008. Mismatch), and even here, the black percentage has been hovering at around 5-6% of the last 30 years- and some of that percentage is in place without needing any "quotas." Similarly Black students going to dull boring State U generally do not need any "quotas" to gain admission. But banging the drum about 'quotas' gives an excellent excuse for white "victim card" slackers who cannot cut the mustard 
  • (d) The primary beneficiary of "quotas" are white, specifically white women. (Sowell 1975, Rai et al 2000, Ore 2005, Pincus 2010, Fletcher and Crosby 2012, etc)
Said white victim card players however run into a propaganda "problem" when it comes to Asians, because: (a) Asians cannot be simply scapegoated like blacks, and (b) Asians clearly outperform whites on many counts. The "two-track" solution is to "blame the blacks" up front, and quietly undercut the Asians on the back end.



This reality is well detailed in books like Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Daniel Golden's The Price of Admissions, which shows that "Asian American students [are held] to a higher standard than whites; comply with Title IX by giving scholarships to rich women in “patrician sports” like horseback riding, squash, and crew; and repay congressmen for favors by admitting their children. He also reveals that Harvard maintains a “Z-list” for well-connected but underqualified students, who are quietly admitted on the condition that they wait a year to enroll."

In the meantime, a torrent of deceptive propaganda fills popular white culture about all the alleged blacks "swamping" white people out of university admissions due to "quotas." But while black admissions (IF using quotas) are less than 7% overall as far as top ranked or "prestige" campuses (where most of the 'affirmative action' battles are), Golden's data shows whites reaping up to 30% of special favor admissions.  The share of black freshmen at elite schools is virtually unchanged since 1980 according to a detailed NY times study drawing on data available from the National Center for Education Statistics. Black students are just 6 percent of freshmen but 15 percent of college-age Americans. Thus for almost 40 years, even after rising black school performances and numbers of students attending college, the percentage of blacks overall has barely budged despite hysterical "black plague" claims. Other data back this up, showing the percentage of blacks in the prestigious Ivy League to weight in at a mere 7%.

Such statistics wax and wane over different surveys but the numbers hold roughly the same- higher one year, lower the next, an important detail to remember when confronted by cherry-picked years held up as gospel by assorted propagandists. It should also be  noted that gains in the number of first-year Black students at some universities may be due to overall increases in the size of the first-year class and not necessarily due to a higher percentage of Black first-year students. Thus a higher percent of incoming black students in Year X may simply be a reflection of a bigger pool of students overall being admitted in that year, not "quotas."

It should be noted that the Asian "caps"are happening in "liberal" venues- from "progressive" California to Harvard and the Ivy League above. Some of this is candidly admitted by conservative businessmen and politicians such as Ron Unz, whose own research exhaustively documents anti-Asian discrimination. Unz's data brought about some howls of right wing protest for exposing the deceptive game, along with liberal denials or strategic silence. There is some question as to Unz's claims about excessive Jewish dominance, given that Jews are well represented on the "merit" track, over and above any legacy type admissions, nevertheless his work does provide a good insight on the falsehoods of assorted race baiters playing the "black menace" card. And according to a U.S. Office of Civil Rights Compliance Review, alumni/legacy children admitted to Harvard scored 35 points below the mean for all freshmen (Synnott 2010. "The Half-Opened Door"). What this means is that a large number of whites who would not make the cut under a normal regime of "merit," STILL gain admission, and those white performances are below some blacks who are admitted under preferences. Yet the scapegoats pushed out front to take the heat for "unfairness" are, again, the blacks.

But the students’ personal ratings significantly dragged down their chances of being admitted, the analysis found.

The court documents, filed in federal court in Boston, also showed that Harvard conducted an internal investigation into its admissions policies in 2013 and found a bias against Asian-American applicants. But Harvard never made the findings public or acted on them.

The documents came out as part of a lawsuit charging Harvard with systematically discriminating against Asian-Americans, in violation of civil rights law. The suit, brought by Students for Fair Admissions, says Harvard imposes what is in effect a soft quota of “racial balancing.” This keeps the number of Asian-Americans artificially low, while advancing less qualified white, black and Hispanic applicants, the plaintiffs contend.

“It turns out that the suspicions of Asian-American alumni, students and applicants were right all along,” Students for Fair Admissions said in a court document. “Harvard today engages in the same kind of discrimination and stereotyping that it used to justify quotas on Jewish applicants in the 1920s and 1930s.”

Harvard disagreed Friday, saying that its own expert analysis showed no discrimination and that seeking diversity is a valuable part of student selection. The university lashed out at the founder of Students for Fair Admissions, Edward Blum, accusing him of using Harvard to replay a previous challenge to affirmative action in college admissions, Fisher v. the University of Texas at Austin. The Supreme Court ruled that race could be used as one of many factors in admissions.

“Thorough and comprehensive analysis of the data and evidence makes clear that Harvard College does not discriminate against applicants from any group, including Asian-Americans, whose rate of admission has grown 29 per cent over the last decade,” Harvard said in a statement. “Mr. Blum and his organization’s incomplete and misleading data analysis paint a dangerously inaccurate picture of Harvard College’s whole-person admissions process by omitting critical data and information factors.”



The lawsuit also confirms what has long been argued on this blog- QUOTE:

A hard look at the patterns above helps explain the mystery of why white universities would SEEMINGLY "hurt" white student admissions with so-called "quotas for blacks" and other non-Asian minorities. Assorted "HBD" types explain it all as evil "liberal do-goodism" and "white guilt" or "self-hate." But a true "race realist" understands the REAL white game. 

While knee-jerk head count admissions may have begun as a "response" to ghetto unrest and activism in the 1960/ 1970s, those times are long gone, and in any event were closely controlled and limited. White people today are not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. The so-called "quotas for blacks" are a smokescreen whites may be using to LIMIT ASIAN NUMBERS, via admission formulas that allow whites to gain slots on things other than strict test scores.

For example, lets say you get extra points for "community service"or "civic engagement." While all those Asian kids are grinding away and going to cram schools solely for the best test score number, the extra points given for "civic engagement" will favor whites, who typically, on the average, can show more of such extracurricular activity. These extra point can tip an admission slot towards a more "well rounded" white candidate, beating out the Asian with a higher number. "Community service" might be only one such "tipping" factor. There are other factors that weigh in college admissions- including Essay writing, Teacher recommendation, Counselor recommendation, Class rank, Portfolio, Extracurricular activities, Work and so on. These factors have helped SOME black candidates build up enough points for admission, but they ALSO work in favor of whites to cut back on Asian slots. Think about it. Why would white people be so incredibly generous as to hurt their own via this wave of "black quotas" alleged by assorted right wingers? They aren't- for 3 reasons:

1) The number of black students admitted under quotas is small and AA quotas have been carefully controlled and limited since the 1970s eg. Bakke. As noted in earlier posts, there is no vast horde of blacks on campus due to "quotas" and quotas are primarily operative on high-end campuses with very few minorities. (Gurin et al 2003. How does Racial/Ethnic Diversity Promote Education? WJBS. 27:1) found that affirmative action exists primarily in hifghly selective colleges that barely have more than 8-10% black students. Such campuses are not where the vast majority, the OTHER 90-92% of black students attend. The famous Hopwood decision of the late 1990s showed that in 1996-97- right before the AA ban by the court, Black enrollments weighed in at an allegedly "massive" 4.7%, of the total enrollment at the elite Texas Law school- hardly the huge wave "swamping white people" assorted propagandists would have us to believe.  And keep in mind that not all blacks admitted to these schools needed quotas. In short, as far as college education overall, affirmative action is a minor player for blacks. As far as teachers, affirmative action has been a rather small player there too:



"The catastrophic scenarios conjured by the neo-conservatives and the [Jewish] agencies never came to pass. In fact between 1968 and 1973, blacks' share of total university faculty jobs grew from 2.2 to 2.9 percent; with historically black colleges and universities removed from the calculations, blacks made up only 0.9 percent of the professoriate. Over the next twenty years, black representation among full-time faculty members grew only .05 percent."

2) Admission "point" systems allegedly "helping only" blacks are MORE helping whites, by enabling them to bypass and squeeze ahead of Asians who may post better raw numbers. Unz's analysis suggests that certain elite institutions can manipulate a variety of factors, not because of "guilt" or "self-hate" but to help whites edge out the Asian competition- you know- via that prototypical "well rounded" candidate. Translation: less "narrow" Asian grinders on campus. A similar pattern operated to screen out Jews in years past. This landscape means that it is whites themselves, for their own agendas, who have a vested interest in preserving the "special preferences" blacks are so often bashed about. Asians threaten white preferences and privilege, hence some whites embrace the same "quotas" they rail against where blacks are concerned. They just don't want it to be too openly seen, hence profitable diversions are welcome. As one scholar notes:

"Ironically, Theodore Cross and Robert Bruce Slater, among others, have contended that 'the tremendous success of Asian students on standardized tests may save affirmative action programs for blacks at the most selective institutions,' including Harvard, because 'a strict merit-based admissions system would pose a particularly serious threat to the sacrosanct system of legacy admissions.' According to a U.S. Office of Civil Rights Compliance Review, alumni/ae children admitted to Harvard scored 35 points below the mean for all freshmen.. The controversy over racial preferences involved only the most competitive 20 percent of colleges and universities, where the number of applicants far exceeded he number of available places, since the overwhelming majority of institutions are not selective. Most whites denied admissions were rejected in favor of other white applicants, not in favor of the comparatively small number of minorities admitted."

3) Blacks can be used as front-men and scapegoats for the above- taking the heat from assorted bigots, bashers and baiters. In the meantime, behind the scenes, the admission structures are manipulated to hinder or slow down the real competition- Asians. The "Fisher" affirmative action case illustrates the point. On her own merits white student Fisher failed to qualify for admission to the University of Texas. Her grades, test scores and ckass ranking did not make the cut. Indeed as a Pro Publica report notes: "In the hundreds of pages of legal filings, Fisher's lawyers spend almost no time arguing that Fisher would have gotten into the university but for her race." But a vast propaganda campaign arose to make her the poster child victim of "the culluds." It was a sure propaganda winner- sweet white female unjustly denied her chance in life by "quotas for blacks." Fisher was denied admission but there were 47 students with  lower test scores/grades that did get in based on test scores/grades and personal achievement (community service, leadership, essays etc). Of the 47 students who did get in ahead of Fisher, 42 were white, and 5 were black or Hispanic. But almost no mention was made of the 42 white students in Fishers' court filings, or most media reports. The propaganda machines seized on the minor number of blacks/hispanics  to gin up a  narrative of noble struggle against evil. Fisher could still have gained entrance by going to another college and then transferring after 1-2 years, but the propaganda gift was just too good for conservative public sphere intellectuals or media operatives to pass up. It is a gift that still keeps giving over a decade later.



Books such as Affirmative Action for the Rich: Legacy Preferences in College Admissions and Color and Money by Schmidt 2007, detail many facts about the "special" preferential admissions used by whites, including those of the not-so-popular sports. 



Assorted hereditarians continually express amazement and puzzlement at why whites are allegedly "hurting" themselves with so-called "giveways to blacks." It makes for a great propaganda narrative- an enemy "Other "to focus anger on- red meat for "the faithful" to fulminate against "the liberals" and "self-hate." But that narrative is for the gullible. As Synnott 2010 below shows- for whites the real competition is Asians, and "Affirmative action" helps cut back on Asians in favor of white alumni/legacy admits. These legacy admits generally perform below regular admittees. If strict merit was used for admissions, many more white people would never make it, and more slots would be taken up by Asians.

Blacks serve as diversionary flak-catchers and smokescreens. They can also be used to demonstrate white goodwill and progressivism- hey- see we got things locked up here in favor of our own white people, but see, we are generous enough to give the culluds a few scraps.. heh.. heh.. focus on that, while we concentrate on the real action- keeping out those Asians.. Its a cynical , and successful propaganda formula- embraced by liberals (who can show how progressive they are) and conservatives (who can whip up "the base"  against "the culluds" for "taking our slots").  Sweet!

Of course its not only the gullible in the mix. Also there are cynical propagandists who know the real facts, but keep churning out distortions and "fake news" to screen the real deal- white profit and benefit. It is like the massive amounts of new government spending that went to schools during the desegregation era. Most of it was pocketed by white school regimes that quickly fired hundreds of black teachers and tore down numerous once thriving black schools - end result: more cash, more facilities and more jobs for mostly white people as the federal largesse flowed.  When the full picture is examined, and the easy propaganda narratives broken down, are white people really "hurting" themselves or helping themselves?
